Recently we have had a barrage of new patients suffering with post-concussion syndrome, many from the long beach California area. A high percentage of these patients are searching for answers. They have been dismayed by their results following conventional medicine protocol which for the most part is rest, pain killers, anti-inflammatory medications, and some are also taking depression medications. Medications can provide relief, but these patients have been scouring the internet looking for a natural solution that can help their bodies heal through the symptoms that started shortly after their concussion injury.
We have written many blogs in the past about post-concussion syndrome. In this article we will discuss a case that started care 4 months ago that suffered three concussions and over the past 2 years has been suffering with post-concussion syndrome. Later in the article is a video describing what this individual suffered with prior to coming in for care, and how cone beam computerized technology (CBCT) is used in precisely determining how upper neck injuries have occurred at the atlas-axis, skull junction. Many people that suffer with post-concussion syndrome are really dealing with a neck injury. The neck injury is producing brain stem and spinal cord irritation at the craniocervical junction which is an underlying cause of the bizarre and devastating symptoms that can occur following concussive injuries.
Long Beach Patient Battles With Post-Concussion Syndrome
This recent case was a 28-year-old female who suffered several different concussive episodes. The first episode was following a soccer ball kicked to the head. The second a surf injury and the third concussion was the result of an airbag going off in a motor vehicle accident. Following the third concussion in 2016 progressive symptomology appeared that became life altering to the point of not being able to function in normal life. As with most post-concussion cases this individual suffered with chronic headaches, tmj, cognitive fog, sensitivity to light, insomnia, depression, nausea, neck and back pain. When she first came in for care we listened to her health history and then ran a complete neurological exam to determine where her neck had sustained injury. These tests include a leg balance test which looks at the distribution of imbalances in spinal and postural muscle tone. We have found that upper neck injuries cause the bodies musculoskeletal system to become asymmetric which leads to a short leg, uneven hips, unleveled shoulders and left or right head tilt. From the side these people generally suffer with forward head posture and flattening of the cervical curve. These postural adaptations are the bodies response to trauma and nervous system irritation occurring at the base of the skull. Further testing such as infra-red thermography and palpation show base level patterns that exist in the injured state. Once we have baseline testing done the patient has either digital x-ray or CBCT imaging to determine exactly how their upper cervical spine has misaligned. Listen below how CBCT imaging is used in our Los Angeles office to precisely locate spinal misalignments in the cervical spine:
What is the Goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care?
Many different cases walk into an upper cervical doctor’s offices. Medicine has the goal of symptom relief and symptom treatment while upper cervical care’s focus is restoring proper neck mechanics, so the nervous system can function optimally. Upper cervical doctors are well trained in identifying if you have a neck injury, where it is, and how the vertebrae has misaligned. Through extensive imaging the doctors can determine exactly how the patient’s joints are built and what direction and how far they have misaligned. With this precise information a gentle spinal correction is made in the neutral position. No cracking, popping, or pulling is used during the correction. The goal is for the correction to “stay” in its normal position for as long as possible. Patients are put on a program of care. At each office visit objective tests are used to determine whether the correction is “holding” or if the patient needs another correction. While the correction stays in it normal position (holds) is where healing accrues. If you or someone you know suffers with post-concussion syndrome our Los Angeles and Carson offices offer a free consultation. We would love to see if we can help you.
The Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique is a specific system of analyzing and adjusting the upper cervical vertebrae of the spinal column. These vertebrae can misalign in such a way as to interfere with the brainstem and spinal cord as they exit through the floor of the skull into the neural canal.
